Rust treatment
Rust rarely starts visibly. A stone chip in the paint or a scratch at the bottom edge is enough to let moisture reach the bare steel. As long as it stays surface rust, a brown haze in the paint or a small bump at a door edge, the problem is solved by sanding, treating and protecting. Structural rust is a different matter: it eats through chassis rails, suspension mounting points or the floor pan and affects the safety of the car itself.
We deal with both, but always after an honest diagnosis. Surface rust is sanded down and repaired in the paint, vulnerable spots get an ML wax treatment (cavities such as sills and doors) and underbody protection against new attack. Structural rust we report without detours: sometimes panel repair is still worthwhile, sometimes the cost no longer weighs up against the value of the car. Rust is, incidentally, one of the most commonly cited reasons for failing the technical inspection, and a car without corrosion simply fetches a better price at resale or trade-in.
When is it needed?
- Brown spots or blistering in the paint, often at wheel arches, door edges or under the boot lid
- Stone chips or scratches not touched up in time
- An older car (generally from 8 to 10 years) never treated before
- You want to keep the car longer and preserve its value
- The inspection failed you on corrosion or noted a remark
Why Cornette?
- Diagnosis first, then treatment: we distinguish surface rust from structural rust before proposing anything
- ML wax treatment in the cavities and underbody protection against new attack
- Straight advice: with structural damage we tell you honestly whether repair still weighs up against the value of the car
- Free quote the same day, based on a visual check of your car

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between surface rust and structural rust?
Surface rust sits in the paint and the bare steel underneath, visible as a brown haze or a small bump. That is solved by sanding and repair. Structural rust has eaten through the bodywork itself, often the chassis rails, suspension mounting points or the floor pan, and affects the strength of the car. During a check we quickly see which category your car falls into.
What exactly does an ML wax treatment involve?
ML wax is sprayed with a special lance into the cavities of the bodywork: sills, doors, the underside of wings. That is often where rust starts invisibly, because moisture sits there without you seeing it. The ML layer displaces moisture and keeps creeping to protect, even in spots a brush never reaches.
What is the difference with underbody protection?
Underbody protection is a thicker, elastic layer sprayed on the visible underside of the car: floor pan, wheel arches, exhaust mounts. It absorbs stone chips and keeps out moisture and road salt. ML wax and underbody protection complement each other: one protects the cavities from the inside, the other the outside.
Can my car fail the technical inspection because of rust?
Yes. Corrosion on load-bearing parts such as the floor pan, suspension mounting points or brake lines is one of the most common reasons for failure. Surface rust on non-load-bearing parts usually gets a remark, structural rust on load-bearing parts leads to a re-inspection. We check for that with every treatment.
Is a rust treatment still worth it on an older car?
Often yes. Rust is one of the things that hits a car's value hardest at resale or trade-in, even if the engine and chassis are in fine shape. A timely treatment keeps the car roadworthy and visibly in good condition for longer. If the rust is already deeply structural, we look honestly at whether it still weighs up.
How long does a treatment take and how often should it be repeated?
An ML wax treatment and underbody protection are usually done in a day. Repeat the treatment every 2 to 3 years, or more often if your car drives a lot on gravel roads or in winter with road salt. During the free quote we look together at a good rhythm for your car and driving habits.
