A lit engine light only says that something is wrong, not what. Behind the same light can sit a loose fuel cap, a worn sensor or a problem that threatens your catalytic converter. Replacing parts blindly until the light goes out is the most expensive way to solve it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still drive with the engine light on?
If the light is on continuously, you can usually keep driving calmly, but come by soon: some faults increase consumption or strain other parts. If the light is flashing, stop as soon as it is safe. A flashing light points to misfires where unburnt fuel can damage the catalytic converter.
Is the fault code the same as the diagnosis?
No. The fault code is the starting point, not the answer. A sensor code can mean the sensor is broken, but just as well that it is correctly measuring a problem elsewhere. That is why we verify: comparing live values, checking voltages and pressures, taking a road test. Only then do we call it a diagnosis.
Can the engine light go out by itself?
Yes. If the fault does not return for a number of trips, the light goes out by itself on many cars. The fault code stays in the memory though. Reading it out is worthwhile even afterwards: you know whether it was a one-off or a problem that will come back.
Can you not just clear the light?
Clearing without fixing the cause solves nothing: the fault returns as soon as the system measures again. On top of that, the technical inspection looks at the engine light and the emission values. We only clear codes after the cause is found and fixed, or by agreement as a test to see whether a fault returns.
Do you read other systems besides the engine?
Yes. Our equipment reads all control modules: ABS and ESP, airbag, gearbox, DPF, start-stop, comfort electronics and also hybrid and high-voltage systems. One readout gives a complete picture of what is registered in the car.
